Japan’s conservative opposition slipped further into disarray on Thursday as Yoichi Masuzoe, the country’s most popular politician, quit the Liberal Democratic party to form a new political group.

Mr Masuzoe, a former health minister who a plurality of Japanese have said in polls they would like to see become prime minister, is the latest leading member of the once dominant Liberal Democrats to leave following its defeat in elections last year.

The defections have disappointed those who hoped that Japanese politics, dominated by a single party since the 1950s, was shifting towards a system in which two robust groups representing the centre-right and centre-left would compete.

The Liberal Democrats this month also lost Kaoru Yosano, a former finance minister who was its most respected voice on economic issues. Last month, Kunio Hatoyama the party’s wealthiest member, and brother of the current prime minister, quit. A number of less prominent members have resigned.

Mr Masuzoe had taken to calling his colleagues the “Lousy Dumb Party” for their failure to refresh policies and mount an effective challenge to the Democratic Party of Japan-led government, which has slumped in the polls since the election. He had urged the Liberal Democrats to take a stronger stance in favour of liberal economic reforms.

“The LDP does indeed appear hellbent on its own destruction,” said Tobias Harris, author of Observing Japan, a political blog. “Instead of taking Masuzoe’s criticisms seriously, the leadership instead goaded the one politician that LDP candidates can stand to be seen with into bolting the party.”

Some Liberal Democrats have questioned the leadership of Sadakazu Tanigaki, a cerebral former minister who took over from the more-flamboyant Taro Aso after last year’s defeat. Mr Tanigaki said Mr Masuzoe had “clearly upset party discipline” and “could not be forgiven”.

A second party parliamentarian, Tetsuro Yano, quit alongside Mr Masuzoe and said he would join the new party, which is to be called the New Reform party. About half a dozen legislators have been recruited, including several who left the Liberal Democrats earlier, but there could be more defections.

The ruling coalition, which faces an upper house election this summer, has lost support owing to funding scandals and confusion over key policies, including a promise to move a US marine base off the island of Okinawa, which has put it at odds with Washington.

“The issue is how can we break through this feeling of hopelessness [in Japanese politics]?” Mr Masuzoe said after delivering his resignation notice.
Of the other well-known party defectors, Mr Yosano has created the Sunrise Party of Japan while Mr Hatoyama is sitting as an independent. Mr Hatoyama said he did not plan to join Mr Masuzoe’s group.
