A declaration that American English should be the standard among the world's English speakers is rather like calls for English to be the "official" language of America, typically suggested out of a prickly discomfort at the sight of Latino labourers talking among themselves in Spanish and an attendant notion that this threatens the eclipse of English.
「英語だけ」と言う努力は非現実的であり,(移民は絶えず母語の方がより満足するだろう。)そして、不必要だ。(彼らの新しい土地の母語の優勢を覆すことはできない。と言うのは彼らの子供たちは完全に英語を話すからだ。)
"English only" efforts are unrealistic (immigrants will always be more comfortable in their native languages) and unnecessary (they cannot upend the dominance of their new land's native tongue because their children will speak it perfectly).
同様に非現実的とか不必要と言うことは英語がわかる人の間の「公用語」としてアメリカ英語を銘記させる要求である。まずは非現実的な部分を見てみよう。方言は一つはなまりであり,一つは言葉づかいだ。なまりに於いて,その出身の英語がイギリス、オーストラリア、インド、シンガポールである人々にどんな使い方を要求すれば、アメリカのなまりに影響を与えるのか?
そんなことは出来る訳がないと言っている。注
Similarly unrealistic and unnecessary is a call for American English to be imprinted as "official" among Anglophones. Let us take the unrealistic part first. A dialect is one part accent and one part grammar. On accent, of what use would it be to require people whose native English is British, Australian, Indian, or Singaporean to affect American accents?
Accent is extremely hard to eliminate—think of how hard it is to master a good one in French, Russian, or any language you have studied, or how we cherish good mimics precisely because they excel at something at which most human beings do not. Are we really proposing that the Indian customer-service reps we work with when something goes wrong with our Dell computers learn to sound like Steve Carell?
When it comes to grammar, we run up against the lack of necessity in the entire proposal. We may be entertained by George Bernard Shaw's grand old aphorism that Britain and America are two countries separated by a common language, but it is funny largely because we know it is not true.
あたかも我々がトルコ語か日本語を取り扱うかのように、明白な翻訳か理解の問題でなければならないと言う指摘として、言語の方言が異なると言う事実を取り上げるのは容易なことだ。しかし、実際の生活の中で,あたかも動植物の種別のように話し言葉の多様性はかなり異なる。
違う言語のように英米語を扱うことは仕方がないことだ。しかし、明日の議論ではこの方言も世界の言語の中で見るとたいした違いは無いと言うことを言っている。注
It is easy to take the fact that dialects of a language differ as an indication that there must be an outright translation or comprehension issue, as if we were dealing with Turkish versus Japanese. But in real life, speech varieties differ to degrees, just as species of flora and fauna do.
