The New Republic and City Journalの寄稿編集者のMcWhorter氏の続きだ。

There are grey squirrels and red ones; there is American English and British English. Neither are, in any useful sense, different animals.

Therefore, just as the idea that black kids in America need translation exercises from "Ebonics" to standard English in order to learn to read makes too much of a minor gap between dialects, the idea that American English needs to be imposed as a worldwide "standard" implies that the lack of such standardisation has been the source of some kind of problem.

But has it? No matter how many cute pairs like "truck" and "lorry" one can come up with, what is the significant communication problem between Brits and Americans? Or, how much of a problem is it when English dialects differ even more?

という白人の労働階級の言い方は「He ain't gonna tell you nothin」だ。 英国の北部ではそれは「He's noan going to tell you nowt」という言葉が出てくるかもしれない。

In America, a working-class white version of "He's not going to tell you anything" is "He ain't gonna tell you nothin'". It is unclear where the opacity is here. In the north of England that might come out as "He's noan going to tell you nowt". Again, this is hardly Hebrew: comprehension requires minor adjustment at best—and I assume even less for English folk.

Sure, English can get further out than that. In Scottish that could come out as "He wina tell thee onything"; in the old Cornish dialect it would have been "Aw bain't gwine for tell ee nawthen". But, surely, dialects like this are not the concern of those proposing American as standard. Almost anyone who grows up using one of those dialects (or, say, the patois of Jamaica or the "pidgin" of Hawaii) can also perform in a less divergent one if dealing with the wider world. That wider world is the topic at hand, I presume—not a crusade against how people talk while they take walks.

Ultimately, to establish one kind of English as "official" would be a handy way to establish a reason to look down on the others—the hierarchical aspect of such a designation would be unavoidable. And for what reason?

Imagine a dystopic Anglophone realm in which we smack people on the hand for spellings like "centre" and for saying "Why didn't you leave me any of the good bits?" instead of the American "good parts".

One more thing: no, there is no reason to assume that British and American English are on their way to becoming separate languages. They would have been a thousand years ago, before there was print, media and widespread literacy to establish standard forms on the page as "what the language is". But once this has occurred, speech changes much more slowly, and especially glacially on the page.

Shakespeare could not even have conversed with English speakers from five centuries before; we can enjoy Shakespeare's language in performance 500 years later. There is a reason. Try this: Shaw died in 1950 and made his comment long before that. Is there any sign that British and American are more different now than they were then?

In any case, to the extent that anyone needs it established that American English now has more juice worldwide than British English, basically, they can be content that it does. Ever fewer Europeans we meet in America have learned British as opposed to American.

American pop trickles out of PA systems all over the world and imprints its accent on people worldwide from the cradle (nobody on the planet is chanting Kanye West's "Gold Digger" in David Cameron's accent).

Recently I watched a street performer in a public square in Copenhagen doing his entire act not in Danish but in English, and American English, with no one batting an eye.

We therefore need hereby declare nothing. It already is what it is, and putting it on paper would have no positive consequences—and more than a few negative ones.

The New Republic and City Journalの寄稿編集者のMcWhorter氏はこれで終わり。
