The answer would be Obama is "good for business" if you are GE, Goldman Sachs or Andy Stern and SEIU. The answer to this question will be provided in November. If Bush were still president with this economy would people be so forgiving to him? Dems controlled the House since 2006. Obama promised unemployment under 8% and we are close to 10%. Companies are sitting on cash because of uncertainy. The Healthcare bill is a disaster, how can you exclude one of the biggest cost drivers tort reform? How could someone be good for business when their cabinet is filled with acedemics and has no one from the private sector representing business. I can't see how this is even a discussion.

Americans are great competitors and right now the greatest challenge is increasing exports to growing economies, who have low per capita incomes. Having a government that helps businesses stay competitive by keeping costs low will be one key.

The economic environment the Obama administration inherited was bad and was getting worse. While the administration did not foresee how bad the economy actually was and how much effort it would take to improve the economy they may have taken a different tact but no one has 20-20 vision looking forward. The administration's actions did prevent the severe recession from becoming a depression with many more businesses failing, including the complete collapse of the American automobile and financial industries, and a significant higher unemployment rate.

We live in a world of having near instant gratification and we were all hoping for a magical recovery but Obama is not a magician and a quick recovery could not have happened. While everyone has an opinion of how the economy would be better if only Obama had done this or that, there is still little consensus that any action would have been significantly better than the actions he took and most would have made us much worse off than we currently are.

I am paying my loans rather than walking away from them, I am first generation American who is surprised by third generation Americans who do not think much about their personal responsibilities and commitments, but need someone to blame. Today it is Obama, tomorrow the fool who will be President.

From the comfort of Australia it's hard to see how anyone can see Obama being worse for business, and everyone for that matter, then George Bush et al.

http://nikkei225kuroiwa.blog90.fc2.com/blog-entry-2677.html

http://fxking777.livedoor.biz/archives/65043211.html

He's begun to deal with the regulatory issues that lead to the financial crisis in the first place. Anyone who thinks that the financial services esctor in the US does not need more regulatory oversight is delusional. If anything he should be looking to use antitrust laws to break up the 'too big to fail' instituions.

Finally Obama has begun to deal with the structural problems in the US economy as a whole. The US spends over 15% of its GDP on healthcare yet doesn't cover at least 15% of the population at all. Compared to countries like Australia which has universal healthcare and only spends 9% of GDP. This extra 6% of GDP is a drag on the US as a whole and the benefits of having a healthier labour force are lost too. Obamacare is belatedly beginning to deal with this issue.

He had to do it. I am not sure we should even call it a housing sector or financial sector reform. What he did was cleaning up the mess that the then present government had neglected (or encouraged). That being said, I am not trying to undermine the importance of his actions. They were no doubt – heroic. But the real question is – why were they necessary? These measures were ought to be taken in order to save the economic system of the country and the entire world supported on that. Mr. Obama’s administration did that job wonderfully. The situation was one of a kind and required extra-ordinary measures. However, who is to say that no other government would have done that.

What I am interested in how he fared under normal i.e. post crisis situation. At many instances, I have felt that post-crisis, his administration had taken a rather communist stance. Hate rich guys and big corporations. It almost seems like he is trying to cap the profits and floor the losses. That is ridiculous.

Some of his trade policies are extremely unfriendly and are hurting business esp. the small and medium enterprises who are trying to make a mark for themselves. Mr. Obama has been intervening in private sectors affairs post crisis to such a deep extent that it has almost become an obsession. It is like he is trying to run everything than is running USA today. For instance, scrutinizing CEO salaries was and to this day remains one of the lowest points in administrative career. (There are many counter-arguments to this but how many of them are really driven by shareholders’ best interest.) Restricting visas to emerging economies is another one. (If you are trying to save jobs in your country then are you saying that your administration in incapable of creating more jobs and therefore you need job-protection? )

Where is the response from the business sector? Is the continuing high rate of unemployment any indication of business gaining from the Obama administration? The answer here weighs heavily for the 'no'.

Then we should also ask is it entirely fair to judge Obama in this way given the horrendous set of problems that he faced from day 1. Could he have been significantly better if the circumstances had been different? And should we not also take account of the previous 25 years of dubious to poor administrations that collectively engendered the financial meltdown?

Judging Obama against the background of disastrous financial management then one should, at the present time, give him some credit and I therefore weigh in for him but it is a close run decision.

It is hard to imagine what people expected, but two years ago we were talking about standing in bread lines, and today 90% of us are employed, living off a currency that continues to be remarkably stable. It is tough for some of us now, but look at the stage that has been set going forward:

Information is traveling at higher velocities than the world has ever seen. Investor demand for energy-efficient technology is so high my company can’t keep up. Loan applications for multifamily housing developments have picked up the slack from the single-family market. And ordinary people are buying up iPhones and Androids to sell them at an enormous markup to consumers in countries like Russia…all transacted online. The BRIC nations are experiencing something comparable to industrial revolutions, and there is tremendous opportunity for the US to intermediate that. We need to be swinging for the fences on all of these openings.

Ending China’s currency manipulation would also have a tremendous impact on our exports, and whatever you think of Geitner, we need to stand strongly behind him on that issue.

Whether or not Obama has been “good for business” is not as relevant as whether “business” has been good for business. This country can’t afford companies that sit on their hands and lobby the government to make it profitable for them to continue doing what they have been doing. We need companies that are going to make the necessary adjustments, and develop the workforce we need to capture the opportunities the world is presenting. We need unions that look beyond their own parochial interests, and view themselves as an important part of a national growth strategy. IMO, we need to stop scapegoating this one man Obama, and take control of what is going on in our own businesses and our own communities.
