What I do see happening is that every industry in the country is lobbying for its own tax-cut, which many of them got while others are still kicking in, and the irresponsible ones have been lobbying to block reform of the financial regulatory structure that made this mess, as well as the health insurance regulatory structure that has been the fundamental component of our long-term deficit outlook we so decry.

Recall a core of the Recovery Act was tax cuts. The stimulus plan, many say, averted a depression. Financial regulatory reform provides safeguards and authorities that did not exist under the previous regime. The public option was rejected. The notion of size limits on megabanks was rejected.

There have been a litany of business tax cuts. There has been expanded funding of emerging energy markets. There has been an approach to education that appears designed to stimulate innovation and success. At the same time, more than many American leaders, the President has offered a sober assessment of America's long-term fiscal position, its dependence on foreign energy sources, and its unsustainable health care spending, with proposals aimed at addressing these long-term structural challenges. The notion that the President is an anti-business 'socialist' seems, to say the least, like exaggerated and rather vacuous rhetoric.

Perhaps the most pressing and substantive concern is whether to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire for the wealthiest Americans. So far, the debate has not seemed too helpful. On one hand, it is a serious concern whether raising any taxes could jeopardize the fragile recovery before it really takes hold. On the other hand, my intuition is many high-income Americans invest substantial wealth in firms growing outside the United States.

If that is true, I am not ready to agree that raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans would necessarily harm America's competitive standing in the world. Indeed, if some of that wealth were reabsorbed into the U.S. economy, in theory it might actually help U.S. firms to grow more than making all the Bush tax cuts permanent and allowing the wealth to flow anywhere and everywhere.

Polls like this make me lose faith in people. I'm sure the numbers will correct once the US economy again falters. Not that it already isn't doing so, it will just take "the Dow" dropping to absurdly low levels for most of these 61% who engage in tremendously shallow analysis to realize how bad the economy, and Obama for perpetuating its decline, really are. And all an economy is is an aggregate of business activity, so don't try to tell me they're different.

Not long to go now in our debate about whether or not Barack Obama is good for business. So far, over 60% of those who have voted think he is. But there is still time for the result to change—especially if all those CEOs we hear grumbling constantly about the president and his policies vote.

Which company exactly is seriously making the argument that the government under Obama destroyed them? I’d like to know their CEOs' names, and what argument they are making to their investors about the government’s impact on their earnings in their annual reports. From what I see, they aren’t making it at all, because their investors look at facts--unlike politics and cable news where people can say whatever they want in the abstract without justifying it in anything concrete. In fact, I’d surmise that if we opened up everyone’s books, we’d see just how much of an impact the government has made on corporate America’s viability, how much has been passed through to them, and where they would have stood without it.

Ms. Gelinas’s whole argument here, and in most of her writings for that matter, are premised on the concept of destroy and let the market rebuild. Fair enough, but that’s not going to put food on the table anytime soon, and IMO, we’ve had quite enough destruction take place over the past three years. Save it for when we’re not trying to come out of a global crisis.

I must admit that I haven’t seen the elasticities between government spending vs. private investment in times like these, but my intuition is that it is a specious argument to say that the private sector would have allocated the resources we have needed since the crash on its own. It froze up entirely, and there was one stimulus (not two), which at the very least seems appropriate, while the Tea Party alternative seems unthinkable…

ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/弾力性

I don’t see where this Administration has undermined business. Competing with the private sector on raising debt? Ha!!! Financial institutions aren’t using the cheap debt they have because deals in their core businesses aren’t underwriting.

www.nomura.co.jp/terms/search/hikiuke.html?banner_id=y2006092201

The question depends on how you define "business" and even what "good" means. To hear Mr. George explain it, "good for business" means GM, Chrysler, and Goldman (on whose board he sits) have survived a recession that should have dissolved them. "Business," in this sense, means big business, the sorts of corporations whose executives and workers give to politicians despite being maligned by them. It's a sort of gentleman's agreement benefiting both. So by that objective measure, yes, this administration has served business well. State capitalism is better established in the U.S. than ever before.

ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/国家資本主義

On the other hand, if "business" translates to "economy," the objective data tell a different story. Mr. George glosses over the question of employment by mouthing lines of jobs saved or created. His claim that, without fiscal stimulus, the situation would be worse is unfalsifiable. It's a weak argument based on uncertain premises. Objectively, the fact remains official unemployment hovers just below 10 percent.

Richard Lorenc

The risks are simply too high and not knowing what new regulations are to come make us extremely cautious. In addition, I don't think it wise for small businesses to be forced to "borrow" and then receive a temporary reward for it...if they were allowed to utilize more of their own capital, they would re-invest in themselves and create jobs.

Cutting state and local budgets would have meant cutting teachers, police officers, and firefighters. Yeh, that's what we need, a bunch of unemployed public servants and the resultant rising crime, disasters, and school dropouts.

Too early to decide. Obama has done some good and is better than the oposite choice at the time.

The problem is that we do not trust him and are afraid of what he will do. I am well aware of the problems we, and the world, are facing, and I am worried about that too, and I do not like what I see. The world seems to like Obama and that gives me a problem because the world is expecting us to do what they want but they do not seem to want to help us.

That translates to our losing our freedom and we don't want that either. This makes it even more a matter of trust. And the way the election is being run shows that we can't trust either party and this is not good. But being Americans, our main interst is in saving our freedom.

So we would like to vote for "JOBS" too and also saving our freedom may very well require saving the world as well. As it stands now the Democrats may be better for getting things done, but the Replublicans might get it done better, but more likely to not get anything done very quickly, and time will not wait for us, and a good leader like Obama may be worth a try, so i will continue to listen with an open mind.

Credible arguments, backed by hard data, as those given by Nobel prize Paul Krugman, show that President Obama's policies have averted a major economic melt down. The tranfer of wealth to the less than 1% richest families in the US during the Republican administrations has seriously eroded the standard of living of the middle classes, with international repercussions. So, only demagogues refuse to behave as responsible "grown-ups", and only have egotistical motivations.
